At a minimum the graffiti artist declares, "I am here. This is my mark. My claim." Victory over non-existence. A personal, artistic claim of public space otherwise dominated by commercial art and corporate messages.

To the graffiti artist the photographer is a 'documentarian' who documents that the graffiti art did exist, thus protecting it from removal and from merely wearing away.
